Dear Elliott:
\J This letter is to confirm my agreement that the AI Laboratory can be used
to carry out interactive image processing for the Viking project. This is based
on the Viking project bearing the full cost of its impact on the AI Laboratory
operations. The operating costs are $347,000 per year plus overhead at 47%,
equaling $510,000.
My understanding is that the Viking project will use 10% of the computing
capacity for a period from December l, 1974 to July 1, 1976 and 807 of an off-hour
eight hour period from July 1, 1976 to December 1, 1976 and 20% during normal hours
from July 1, 1976 through March 31, 1977.
I do not anticipate that any changes in the operating system environment
will be made which will impact the Viking project use. If there are unanticipated
needs for changes I will give at least six months notice to allow alternative plans
to be made.
Elliott Levinthal will be principal investigator of this project. In
addition to new personnel which shall be his responsibility, it will
involve a fraction of Dr. Lynn Quam's time and full time for Bo Eross and Marsha
Jo Hannah.\.
